Education
Educational facilities and systems in south-central regions of Somalia face ongoing severe disruptions due to armed conflicts, natural disasters, and pandemics. HIRDA has worked to support education within communities with a focus on promoting gender equality and access to education for girls.
Our current presence in 120 primary schools and one secondary school includes construction and rehabilitation efforts to ensure facilities run smoothly and are suitable for learning.
Core projects aim to uplift the importance of literacy and provide opportunities for informal education, including basic vocational training for out-of-school youth and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

HIRDA’s Education Programming Objectives
- Increase equal access to education for children and strengthen opportunities for parental involvement in their children’s
- To increase literacy rates and school enrolment and retention through the provision of quality basic
- To create opportunities for youth by providing informal education, vocational training, and creating job
- Build capacity and create awareness for parents, CECs, and
HIRDA works with formal and informal education actors to champion educators, mentors and peer-to-peer learning and ensure a well- rounded support system for students. Core components of this strategy include:
Professional support for educators through in-service teacher training, group and individual coaching, and access to essential teaching and learning materials.
Community and parental involvement through our Mobilise and Mentor Program that recruits local volunteers to help facilitate activities and aid daily operations.
Child-to-child training (CTC) to empower children as agents of change and equip youth with the leadership skills needed to identify issues and take action within their communities for peace building and conflict resolution.
Alternative Basic Education (ABE)
In partnership with UNICEF and other partners, HIRDA works to advance access to alternative basic education in line with the Go-to-school (G2S): Educating for Resilience Initiative (2013-2022) established by the Federal Government of Somalia. This initiative aims to increase life skills training, peace education, numeracy, and literacy.
Education in Emergencies (EiE)
Due to heavy rains, communities in the Bardhere and Luuq districts of Somalia face the risk of natural disasters such as flash floods, which impact displaced and disadvantaged communities. HIRDA works in these districts to retain enrolled children in affected schools and ensure their right to education. The Education in Emergencies project also aims to increase equitable access to education for IDP children by working with schools to allow enrollment where feasible. The EiE project was developed as an emergency response mechanism and further illustrates HIRDA’s commitment to providing child protection services.
